I'm Marissa Barrett, accessories maker, social entrepreneur, and Nashville native. I design quality, versatile goods from recycled fabrics for compassionate, adventurous individuals who want to create a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.
Forgiveness and second chances are important to me. I don't believe that our past defines us. That's why a portion of profits supports counseling and adoption services in my community.
Together, we are saving our environment and helping people in need find peace, acceptance and family through a local nonprofit, AGAPE (pronounced "äˈɡäˌpā,or ˈaɡəpī" and means "selfless love" in Greek).
Repurposed.
Every accessory is made using recycled fabrics like (t-shirts, military canvas, etc.). By keeping discarded materials out of landfills and bringing them new life, we reduce waste and lower demand for fast fashion (clothes and accessories intended for one time use). Novel Creature is made to repurpose these materials into versatile and durable accessories, that you can use over and over.
Ethical.
I've studied apparel construction and have a BA in Psychology and an M.Ed in Counseling. Like you, I care about how the goods I buy were made and about who made them. By choosing a social enterprise, you can make a difference know that your goods were made ethically and that your purchase supports a greater cause.
Original.
Because I use recycled materials that are hand dyed, no two pieces are exactly alike. Each piece is unique, just like you. Your gifts, your personality, your style are all reflective of who you were made to be.
Community-focused.
Since starting online in 2011, Novel Creature has been sold in 5 stores in Tennessee and featured in Southern Living, Nashville Lifestyles, and on the Nashville Mom Blog. I've participated in several festivals and craft shows including Nashvember, raising money to help victims of sex trafficking. In 2014 I hosted a festival with local vendors, musicians, food trucks, and a local brewery to raise money for the same nonprofit that I support through sales.
Made in Nashville.
Nashville's my home town. After graduating college in California, I had to come back- I love it here! Nashville is such a beautiful place, where heritage meets creativity and people come together to inspire and serve one another.
